GALVESTON, TX (April 25, 2019) The District is excited to announce that Walter Fortune will join the Galveston ISD team as the New Athletic Director. The GISD Board of Trustees approved the hire of Fortune late Tuesday evening with a unanimous vote in his favor.
Fortune will assume his new duties effective July 1st.
“In leading the Galveston Athletic Department, my vision will be to provide student-athletes a safe environment that promotes and supports academic, athletic and personal achievement,” Fortune said. “Our athletic programs will encourage and empower student-athletes to become better students, athletes, leaders and citizens. Our athletic department will help to prepare for the transition beyond high school, both academically and athletically.”
Fortune, a Texas native, has extensive experience in high school sports bringing a total 29 years of athletic administration experience, nine of those years serving as an athletic director and 12 years serving as a head coach. Most recently, Fortune was an athletic coordinator and coach for Grand Oaks High School in Conroe ISD.
“After two interviews with Mr. Fortune, we quickly realized that there was a great alignment of expectation of what Galveston ISD athletics could become. The new structure will allow the athletic director to provide a strong framework that would then allow all of the coaches to be the faces of their programs.” Exclaims GISD Superintendent, Dr. Kelli Moulton.
Fortune is an active member of the Texas High School Athletic Director’s Association and Texas High School Coaches Association. He has also served on the Greater Houston Football Coaches Association Board of Directors.
Fortune graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1989, where he played on the Bearkat Football Team and earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Teaching. Mr. Fortune earned his master’s degree in 2001 from Stephen F. Austin State University in Educational Leadership.
